Build a shortlist
Start with firms that serve the relevant area. A directory profile gives you names and contact details; ask each firm whether it currently handles your type of matter.
Verify the individual lawyer
Ask which lawyer would be responsible for your case. Check that person with the licensing authority for the state where the lawyer says they practice; a firm profile does not verify an individual license.
Discuss relevant work
Describe your situation briefly and ask what experience the firm has with similar matters. Ask who will perform the daily work and whether another firm might receive a referral.
Compare communication
Ask who your main contact will be, how updates are delivered, and how questions are handled. Use the same questions with each firm so you can compare actual answers.
Review the agreement
Ask for fee and expense terms in writing. Read the agreement and clarify anything you do not understand before signing.
